    ‘Barefoot Bandit’ Seeks Flight-Training Funds
    By Mary Grady | December 20, 2016

Colton Harris-Moore, whose two-year teenage crime spree included the theft of several small airplanes -- which he had taught himself to fly from manuals and videos -- pled guilty in 2011 to 33 counts of burglary and theft, and now has served his sentence and is seeking funds through GoFundMe to start his legitimate flying career. “Something that I think should be said right out of the gate is that, this is not a sad story,” Harris-Moore writes at the GoFundMe site. “This is about airplanes!” Now 25 and living in Seattle, Harris-Moore says he has “tried to keep a low profile” since his release from prison in September, but feels the time is right to pursue his dream of a flying career. “Believe me, I love airplanes, but I will never steal one or break the law again,” he writes.

Harris-Moore breaks down the amounts he will need to get all his ratings at local flight schools, from private pilot to commercial, instrument, and CFI, in both airplanes and helicopters, and comes up with $125,496. He said he hopes to raise the money quickly so he can start training and get a job as soon as he is done. He expects the training will take several months, and then he’ll apply for a job as a helicopter medevac pilot. Harris-Moore paid restitution to the victims of his crimes after selling movie rights to Sony, according to Seattle’s King5 news station.

By the end of the day, however, the fundraising effort had been put on hold. "Well, I guess I spoke too soon," Harris-Moore posted in an update at the GoFundMe site. "They requested that I PAUSE donations until they can approve the GoFundMe. So, that's what I have done. It may take a week or two for them to approve this, so please be patient! Remember I am still on probation and still have to jump through the hoops! I'll do whatever it takes!" $1,575 was raised from 32 donors before the hold took effect.

LL: At least this guy actually PAID restitution and is seeking a legitimate career after getting out of Prison, lol!

I am for giving him a second chance. He was very young on his own with no parents or relatives to help him. He found his calling and wants a career.......and why not!;)

.........it seems they told the kid NO...about his web site to raise money...it seems he still owes 129k in damages. He received a cool million for his picture Rights and all of it was applied to pay back his victims.....his parole officer made the kid shut down the site until the 129 k is paid back...

....this is pure bravo sierra...the kid deserves a chance....

Maybe Obuma could ppardon him.....yeah right!!,,,

    How stupid are we?

The kid has no income. He wants to be a pilot so he can get a job...he wants to streighten out his life

Exactly but! Consider the average aptitude of power hungry parole officers.

F==k him. He's 25 now- still a child, and still on probation. Hollywood wants to romanticize his story. He thinks he can get some sympathy now. I say let him prove he has changed by staying out of trouble until he's 40 years old. There are PLENTY of other children who had hard knocks when growing up, but they didn't go to jail. Let's sponsor the ones that did NOT go to jail. Let's sponsor the disadvantaged youth that do things the right way. Additionally, if he stole my airplane, Hollywood's romantic story about him would have a different ending.

I suspect the advance on a movie is based on a story of his success in the future as well. You know, the tear jerker 'rags to riches' story. If he pays full restitution to ALL including the stolen plane owner, and has truly repented his one stupid escapade(that we know of), I'd lean easy on him.

Having been a kid in love with flying since seeing the movie Airport at 12 years old but with good parental guidance I say let the kid have a second chance. I didn't steal planes just flew on airliners by myself at age 15 with tickets I bought myself but I was lucky to grow up in my family. So I understand. He didn't have that chance.

Years ago, when I worked for a prison system in a Midwestern state, we had an inmate who was serving time for larceny of an aircraft. At the time, my facility was providing a three-man labor crew to a nearby Army National Guard base, which had helicopters. His classification card was marked, "Do not assign to Aviation Crew."
