Although it is very early in the investigation, it appears the aircraft may have had a bomb on board!

It needs to be looked at quickly so another aircraft does not go down

Terrorist activity in that part of the world is a big problem

I wonder if they'll be able to blame Boeing for this one.

A 737-500 is an old aircraft and maintnenance in these countries are questionable !!!!

    Pilot qualifications are unknown too

If weather was bad with something in those heavy rain clouds, ATC should have been able to warn the flight?

BTW Biggles the 737-500 could be 20-30 years old and these aircraft were sold by US carriers to foreign countries

Yet another weekend starting with my thoughts and prayers are with the passengers and crew members 6 of them deadheading to their next flight. Far too early to tell what caused this accident but the airline had not had an accident since its inception in 2003. Although Indonesia registered aircraft have been banned from the EU and US until 2018 and the US until 2016 the safety record of even the flag carrier Garuda is still sketchy. The aircraft was 26 and 8 months old and according to reliable report had been certified flight by the Indonesian Authorities as airworthy as it was mechanically checked prior to returning to service. It was in storage in a hangar form March 2020 to November 2020 because of the downturn in air travel due to the Covid-19. The plane had been certified by Indonesian Authorities to return to service and had completed 132 flights prior to the accident. It was originally delivered to Continental and then integrated into the United fleet during the merger. United sold the aircraft to Sirwijaway Airlines in 2012 during that airlines fleet modernization program to retire its fleet of Boeing 737-200's. Prior to the airline suspending service but of all five flights in March 2020 it was under investigation by Indonesian authorities for maintenance irregularities of its fleet so who knows. A 10,000 feet dive in 30 seconds immediately indicated a possible bomb or explosion to me or disorientation of the flight crew since they were flying through heavy rain with no visible horizon. Fortunately they have recovered the FDR and have a general location of CVR. It will be a year before we know anything Indonesia doesn't issue "interim reports.".

According to AvHerald, Indonesia has ordered inspections on all early model 737s, but my Indo friends haven't heard about these inspections. If it's true, it points to structural failure. The wreckage reminds me of Valujet.

Yep, can’t rule out structural either.
