Go back to basics- the slow failure of the attitude gyro in primary instrument training. It's insidious because it happens slowly and therefore it's hard to detect.
The training discussed in this article is similar- train pilots to recognize the airplane is not doing what it's supposed to be doing and take over by flying manually. Most simulator based training involves a full failure of various components. In real life, components may fail partially and pilots won't recognize something is wrong before the situation degrades to dangerous levels. In a similar manner, a hacked navigation database could cause a plane to fly into a mountain and pilots need to recognize the situation and take over manually.
